Word of Mouth Carpentry

Woodworker Art Knowles designs and handcrafts beautiful objects from solid woods in their natural colors, from earrings to furniture to garden sculpture. Each piece of his work is unique. Art lives near Hillsborough, N.C. where he and his wife, Leslie, are building a tree house extraordinaire in the middle of their lovely wooded land. While working primarily as a woodworker and carpenter during his 30 years in Piedmont North Carolina, he has created artwork in batik, clay, stained glass, assemblage, and cast concrete. He is also a musician, songwriter, poet and photographer.

November 29, 2008: Art Knowles has just been chosen by the Durham (NC) Arts Council as an Emerging Artist for 2008!

ARTwood JEWELRY

New

ARTwood: this lightweight jewelry is thoughtfully handmade from many pieces of solid woods in their original colors. They are not stained or painted, and no two pairs are ever the same. Please keep them dry, store in a jewelry box, and wear with care.

Illuminated Heartwood

Illuminated Heartwood is Art Knowles’ name for his unique window hangings. Art crafts them from yellow pine that has dense veins of resin running through the grain. He cuts them into thin slices, glues two side-to-side to create a mirror image of the grain and resin patterns, and then frames them. The resin acts as a lens, allowing even, low levels of light to glow warmly in evocative shapes. They are best hung in north or east windows, out of prolonged direct sunlight.

Illuminated Heartwood Lamps

I also use the illuminated heartwood panels in lamps.

Porch Swing and Garden Bench

The porch swing is made of western cedar. It’s very comfortable, shaped with gentle curves that fit and support the body. The top is cut to suggest rolling hills, and the whole swing is assembled with sturdy stainless-steel screws. The cedar smells good! It will eventually turn a soft grey in color. If you don't have a porch or tree to hang this from, I also make a handsome and comfortable garden bench.
